The Science of Life Ayurveda, derived from Sanskrit words ‘Ayur’ (means Life) and Veda (means knowledge of science), is an ancient holistic natural wellness system practised in Indian sub-continent since pre-historic times. Over the centuries, Ayurveda has matured from a verbal knowledge passed from one generation to another to a structured science. The first scripture on Ayurveda, Charak Samhita, was written by the legendary physician Charaka in the 2nd Century BC. Modern Ayurveda is based on the fundamentals described in Charak Samhita and other scriptures and books written primarily in Sanskrit.
Ayurveda works on the principles of balancing five nature elements (earth, air, water, fire, and sky) in a body. The combination of these elements in a human body establishes three Doshas or Constituents – Vata, Pita and Kapha. Imbalance in doshas affect smooth functioning of the body and can cause various ailments. Ayurveda practitioners believe in recommending custom solutions to patients after thoroughly studying their doshas. Ayurveda recommends proper Aahar (food), Vihar (lifestyle) and Aushadh (medicine) to restore and maintain natural balance in the body.
Ayurveda captures vast knowledge about therapeutic benefits of herbs, shrubs and trees across various parts of Indian subcontinent. All ingredients have been categorized by their taste, heating or cooling effects, effect after digestion, external application and other properties.
Ayurveda recommends using fresh, cold pressed and unrefined ingredients to retain their potency and get desired effects in the final product.
Ayurveda treasures are full of remedial secrets for healthy skin and hair. Ayurveda believes that true outer beauty can only be achieved when there is a balance between body, mind and soul and all internal body systems are functioning properly. Outer beauty is a true reflection of inner beauty.
Ayurveda outlines regular usage of Herbal Oils, Scrubs, Herbs Infusions, Essential Oils and Salts to cleanse, exfoliate, nourish and moisturize skin and hairs. Ayurveda, though well known in western countries, has low acceptance and is limited to Panchkarma centers (body massage). This is primarily due to lack of scientific studies and clinical trials to support claims in medicinal products.
The composition of a plant can be broken down to two main components – Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) and base material like cellulose, starch, etc. Efficacy of plants and medicines are determined by presence of minimum quantity of desired APIs. Plants that are grown outside of their native habitat often have lower content of APIs. At Life and Pursuits, our Botany and Horticulture experts do pre-screening of herbs before processing them.
