Globally, people are making lifestyle changes and switching to organic options, be it for organic food, skin care or apparels. ‘Organic’ lifestyle is not just a marketing buzzword, but offers several health and environmental benefits.
Organic term is applicable to plant and animal based raw or derived products that are produced without contamination of inorganic fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides or any chemical growth hormone. Organic Agriculture is more sustainable as farmers deploy greener techniques and ingredients easily available in a farm ecosystem like cow dung, Neem fruits, etc. Such methods help in conserving environment without harming natural nutrients and beneficial organisms found in soil and water.
Several government and non-profit agencies across the globe have defined standards and best practices to prevent misuse of “Organic” term. The scope includes everything from soil, seed to processing technique, packaging and storage. Many countries have regulated the usage of ‘Organic’ term on products. Only organizations meeting the technical requirements are permitted to use the term. India currently does not have any such regulation.
The thumb rule is if a product is not certified, it is not organic. Authentic products carry a seal of recognized organic certifying body such as USDA NOP, India NPOP, NATRUE, Ecocert. The certification helps customers in making informed decision about which product they can trust and use. The certification also saves consumers from companies that ‘green wash’ their products but actually sneak in harmful synthetic substances. At Life & Pursuits, we believe that all our actions and claims should be verified by reputed third party and government organizations. This makes it easier for consumers to take a conscious decision. Our products are certified by the following Organic Certifications:
USDA Organic is the official Organic program of the Government of the USA. It is the most well-recognized and stringent organic certification globally. The certification was launched to define standards for food and agricultural by-products. However, it has now been extended to skin care and textile products. USDA offers 3 classifications based on the percentage of organic ingredients in the products.
India NPOP (National Program for Organic Production) is the certification program implemented by the Government of India. The program covers agriculture and animal products manufactured in India. The certification and assessment procedures of NPOP are recognized by USDA and European Commission.
NATRUE is the leading Europe based Organic Certification program committed to promote Natural and Organic Cosmetics worldwide. NATRUE analyzes both ingredients and processes used for products development. Apart from organic ingredients, NATRUE also ensures products are free from synthetic colours, silicone oils, genetically modified substances, etc.
